[EN] At the end of the 19th century, the development of the Fabric district spurred the transformation of Traian Square into a secondary urban hub of Timișoara, almost as vibrant as the historic center. The building in which we intervened is part of this fabric of period constructions, with the ground floor dedicated to commerce and the upper floor reserved for housing. Over time, however, it underwent numerous alterations and uncontrolled extensions in the courtyard, while the façade gradually lost all of its original ornamentation.
Our intervention aimed both at the functional reactivation of the building and at the reconstitution of its architectural spirit. We proposed a mixed-use structure of residential and commercial spaces, in a balanced and complementary relationship, restoring the building’s role as an active element in the life of the square.
The main façade was reimagined based on archival photographs: volumes, proportions, and decorative details were reinterpreted with respect for the historical expression, yet with a contemporary sensibility and clarity.
The existing gallery was extended with a glass platform, introducing light as an element of transparency and verticality.
In the courtyard, we opted for a declaratively contemporary approach. The extension was designed as a volume with glazed façades, allowing natural light to generously flood the living spaces and transforming the courtyard into a bright, airy, and welcoming place. Thus, the contrast between the reinterpreted historic façade and the modern openness of the courtyard creates a direct dialogue between two eras and two ways of understanding architecture.
The intervention included the rehabilitation of the basement and ground floor, the complete restoration of the upper floor, and the conversion of the existing attic into a habitable loft. Inside, constructive solutions and materials were chosen to ensure the necessary comfort, while preserving a certain sobriety that respects the character of the building.
Through this approach, the building regains not only its functional and aesthetic value but also its status as a landmark of the square. It actively contributes to the regeneration of the Fabric district, offering an example of balance between heritage recovery and contemporary architectural expression. Ultimately, the project becomes a demonstration that past and present can coexist in a coherent and expressive form, strengthening the urban identity of Timișoara.

[RO] La sfârșitul secolului al XIX-lea, dezvoltarea cartierului Fabric a impulsionat transformarea Pieței Traian într-un pol urban secundar al Timișoarei, aproape la fel de vibrant ca centrul istoric. Clădirea în care am intervenit face parte din acest tesut de construcții de epocă, cu parterul destinat comerțului și etajul rezervat locuirii. De-a lungul timpului, însă, aceasta a suferit numeroase modificări și extinderi necontrolate în curte, iar fațada și-a pierdut treptat întreaga ornamentație originară.
Intervenția noastră a urmărit atât reactivarea funcțională a clădirii, cât și reconstituirea spiritului său arhitectural. Am propus o structură mixtă de locuire și spații comerciale, într-o relație de echilibru și complementaritate, care să redea clădirii rolul de element activ în viața pieței.
Fațada principală a fost reimaginată pe baza fotografiilor de arhivă: volumele, proporțiile și detaliile decorative au fost reinterpretate , cu respect față de expresia istorică, dar și cu o sensibilitate actuală și claritate.
Cursiva existentă a fost extinsă cu o platformă de sticlă, care introduce lumina ca un element de transparență și verticalitate.
În curte, am optat pentru o abordare declarativ contemporană. Extinderea a fost concepută ca un volum cu fațade vitrate, permițând luminii naturale să pătrundă generos în spațiile de locuit și să transforme curtea într-un loc luminos, aerisit și prietenos. Astfel, contrastul dintre reconstituirea istorică a fațadei principale și deschiderea modernă a curții creează un dialog direct între două epoci și două moduri de a înțelege arhitectura.
Intervenția a inclus reabilitarea subsolului și a parterului, restaurarea completă a etajului și mansardarea podului existent. În interior, soluțiile constructive și materialele au fost alese astfel încât să asigure confortul necesar, dar și să păstreze o anumită sobrietate care să respecte caracterul cladirii.
Prin această abordare, clădirea își recapătă nu doar valoarea funcțională și estetică, ci și statutul de reper al pieței. Ea contribuie activ la regenerarea cartierului Fabric, oferind un exemplu de echilibru între recuperarea patrimoniului și expresia arhitecturii contemporane. În final, proiectul devine o demonstrație că trecutul și prezentul pot conviețui într-o formă coerentă și expresivă, consolidând identitatea urbană a Timișoarei.
